Injury Recovery Shouldn't Be So Difficult, or Done Alone

Where Are You At In Your Injury Recovery?

Starting the process of an ideal full-recovery begins at the very moment the injury has occurred.  There is much you can do pre-surgery to not only prepare your nervous system for the mental and physical trauma of surgery, but also facilitate an ideal outcome of surgery and recovery from surgery.

More than 50 years ago, psychologist Irving Janis conducted studies with Yale students that showed how increased anxiety before surgery is associated with delayed recovery after surgery. Since then, multiple studies have replicated these findings, reporting that the more anxiety a person experiences before surgery, the more pain medication a person requires after surgery, which often leads to a delayed discharge from the hospital. For some people, this preoperative fear can last for years and can impact their willingness to engage with any future medical encounter.

There is no doubt that all injuries come with difficulties.  The peaks and valleys during recovery can both offer unique opportunities to learn more about who you are, how your body functions, and what focal points are important in your thoughts of the future.

Psychophysiology is the study of the interactive relationship between the mind and body.  The function, or disfunction of either mind or body directly influences the function, or disfunction, of its counter-part.  The nervous system is the main source of communication between the two.  Miscommunication from the sender, or receiving end of a message flowing through the nervous system can alter, shape, or even define how well you recover from your injury and how readily you are able to get back to peak performance.

There are many messages from the body or mind that are (in)directly speaking to your conscious self.  Your ability to become aware of the message, enter the conversation, and become the architect of the response will allow you to achieve greater skill in the Art of Injury Recovery.

If you've had multiple injuries over the past few years, whether it's an identical re-injury or a novel injury, this is what we call an injury-cycle.
